The Lion's Tail
As part of Beyond Horizon, Afrang Nordlöf Malekian presents a lecture performance connected to The Lion's Tail (2025), a series of works inspired by the lion-and-sun motif, a symbol that appears throughout the visual and cultural history of Iran and Central Asia. Through choreographic sculptures, a mural, and a lecture performance, he reimagines this emblem by performing history from the lion's perspective.
Afrang Nordlöf Malekian (b. 1995) is an Iranian-Swedish artist based in Berlin and Stockholm. Working through performance, installation, and archival research, Nordlöf Malekian playfully traces hybridisations of precolonial, colonial, leftist, and migratory cultural practices across photography, dance, and music. His work asks how these forms might become forces that subvert and unsettle nationalistic traditions.
