Wang Shuo: Begge sider av fjellet
At snø galleri, a solo exhibition by Chinese artist Wang Shuo, “The Two Sides of the Mountain,” is on view. The mountains and forests in this exhibition mostly come from his memories of that short stay in Bergen a year earlier.
The exhibition presents contemporary ink painting in traditional Chinese mounting formats, featuring a total of nine hanging scrolls and two handscroll works. The landscape hanging scrolls continue the tradition of Chinese literati painting, using techniques such as blank space and mist to create an interplay between presence and absence. Viewers “walk” through the images perceptually; the space feels open and fluid, paying tribute to an Eastern aesthetic that honors “change itself.” The two handscrolls, Northern Landscapes and Observing the Abyss, are experienced in a rhythm where the right hand unrolls the painting and the left hand rolls it up, gradually entering the world within the image.
