Jelsen Lee Innocent’s art practice challenges inherited narratives about power structures. Using materials that surround us in everyday life and public spaces, Innocent fosters a critical dialogue about the role of art in confronting injustice, both historically and in our time.
“Truth Has No Friends in The West” is Innocent’s first solo exhibition in Norway. Central is a critical perspective on the exploitation of Haiti, a country with a history marked by resistance, but also vulnerability resulting from external forces. The US in particular, often with the help of multinational corporations, has over time destabilized Haiti's ecology, economy, and sovereignty.
"Truth Has No Friends in The West" invites the audience to reflect on how these forces affect both the Caribbean and the rest of the world. How do we understand the legacy of colonialism in society today? How does media contribute to maintaining established power structures? And how can we challenge these structures?
