In connection with Hold\ – the MFA Graduation Exhibition 2025, Carmel Alabbasi presents the sound collage Violet Minaret.

A minaret is not merely the place from which prayer is called; it is the site for a summons for memory, a beckoning for witnesses in moments of consequence. This work is a sound experimental collage stitches field recordings from Gaza during the past 19 months. Archival Voices and sounds of freedom fighters worldwide blend with the silent cries of Gaza’s mothers, while students’ chants rise like liturgy against the machinery of empire.
