Cinema: The Stranger

This new adaptation of Albert Camus' novel The Stranger (1942) is set in Algeria in 1938. The enigmatic Meursault (Benjamin Voisin) has just lost his mother, but appears seemingly unaffected. He lets everyday life be driven by chance — until his neighbor Raymond gets into trouble and Meursault is led toward a fateful confrontation on a beach. François Ozon stays close to the existential core of the novel, but gives the story more distinctly political dimensions, bringing the colonial conditions in Algeria further into the foreground.
