A visual masterpiece in striking black-and-white exploring gender, identity, and survival. In this Austrian-German period drama set in the 17th century during the Thirty Years' War, a mysterious soldier arrives in an isolated village. The soldier gradually earns the community's respect but conceals a fatal secret: "He" is Rose, a woman who has passed as a man for years. The situation brutally escalates when she is pressured into an arranged marriage with the neighboring farmer's daughter.
