Autumn's arrival at Sukkerbiten is marked by Mark Power's ode to BBC's iconic weather forecast program, "The Shipping Forecast". Celebrating 100 years on air, it covers the waters around the British Isles. Over a period of four years, Power photographed these areas, searching for visual metaphors for the show's unique language and mantra-like delivery. The result was over 14,000 photographs, distilled into 63 images and texts describing the exact weather forecast for the location on the day they were taken. The photo book from 1996 quickly became a cult classic, and last year it was reissued in a revised and expanded edition with over one hundred previously unpublished photographs (Gost Books 2023).
For its Norwegian premier, it is only fitting that The Shipping Forecast is exhibited in the country's most weather-exposed gallery. 50 images will fill the outdoor space and the complete series will be screened in the container, accompanied by the original sound piece from the 90s.
