Motherlines is a solo exhibition by British artist Alexis Soul-Gray exploring the maternal line, the invisible inheritance passed from mother to daughter through generations. Soul-Gray lost both her mother and grandmother to hereditary cancer within the same year, and these paintings are her search for a visual language for what was never said.
Working with found imagery from mid-century knitting catalogues and domestic magazines, Soul-Gray builds surfaces through layers of oil paint and household chemicals. The works hover between memory and forgetting, between the personal and the universal. The exhibition includes paintings that navigate grief, motherhood, and the weight of hereditary illness across generations.
