Once upon a time there was an island named Thule, for centuries considered as the northern end to the world as known by humankind. With the emergence of modernism, Thule disappeared – no geographer or cartographer has been able to find it. Was Thule ever a real place? Or is it just a construct of human imagination? An attempt to describe the unknown, what lies beyond the limits of human perception?

Departing from the legend of Thule, curator Jorge Van den Eynde has invited the artists Nanna Amstrup, Maja Nilsen, Vilde von Krogh and Amalie Vestergaard Olsen to suggest alternative landscapes, folklores, and tools. Can this this mythological place shed new lights on the eco social crisis of our present time?

East of the Sun, West of the Moon reimagines the relationships between subject and object, nature and civilization. Through fantastic narration, the exhibition questions the absolutism of rationalism, facing the simultaneous and on-going collapses of capitalism and ecosystems.
